Brick calculator FAQs

How many standard bricks are needed per square metre?+

A common South African planning rate is about 52 modular bricks per m² for a single skin with 10 mm joints. Actual brick dimensions and the specified bond must be confirmed.

What does double skin mean?+

A double-skin or two-leaf wall has two masonry faces. This calculator doubles the masonry face area, but it does not calculate cavity ties, reinforcement, insulation or structural details.

How much waste should I add?+

Ten percent is a practical starting point for straight walls. Complex bonds, many corners, cuts or fragile units may need more, while large repetitive work may be optimised by a proper take-off.

Is the mortar estimate exact?+

No. It uses an indicative mortar volume and 1:5 mix. Unit size, frogs, joint width, workmanship and batching change consumption, so the project specification must govern.
