Record one rain event before choosing a repair
A short video from a safe, sheltered position is often more useful than inspecting a dry gutter. It shows the order in which the system fails.
- Photograph the roof shape, valleys, upper-roof discharges, gutter runs, outlets and every downpipe from ground level.
- Note whether the rain is light, steady or unusually intense and whether wind is driving water beneath the roof edge.
- Record the first overflow location, how quickly it begins and whether water also appears at a ground connection or stormwater pit.

Step by step
Observe from the ground first
During safe rainfall, film the sequence from a sheltered position. Note whether the first spill is at a valley, outlet, gutter joint, long run, overflow slot, downpipe shoe or ground connection. Do not stand below a loose gutter or overflowing electrical service.
Separate roof drainage from underground drainage
A gutter can be clear while the buried stormwater route is blocked or overwhelmed. If water rises where a downpipe enters the ground, at a pit, or near a rainwater tank, stop hose testing. Forcing more water into the system can increase flooding beside or beneath the house.
Remove only safely accessible debris
Use gloves and remove leaves, nests and sludge without pushing them into the outlet. A ground-operated tool or professional vacuum may reduce work at height, but it still needs controlled use and a way to confirm the outlet is clear. Never lean, overreach, work alone in poor conditions or rest a ladder on fragile guttering.
Test one outlet with a gentle flow
After debris is removed, introduce a modest hose flow from the end farthest from the outlet and confirm that water moves continuously. Stop immediately if it backs up, emerges at a joint, or rises from the ground connection. A hose test does not prove capacity for a design storm.
Inspect fall, joints and supports
From a safe position, look for sagging sections, standing water after the test, loose brackets, separated joints, corrosion and outlets positioned above a low point. Persistent ponding can hold silt and accelerate deterioration; correcting fall or support spacing is a repair task, not simply a cleaning task.
Check capacity and overflow as one design
A competent roof-drainage or plumbing professional should use the actual roof catchment, local design rainfall, gutter profile, valley and upper-roof flows, outlet positions, downpipes and discharge route. Adding a larger gutter or extra downpipe cannot help if the downstream pipe, soakage system or legal outlet cannot accept the flow.
Protect the building and verify in rain
The finished system must direct normal flow and unavoidable overflow away from walls, soffits, openings and foundations. Recheck during the next suitable rain, photograph the result and inspect the fascia, ceiling and ground below. Repeat maintenance according to nearby trees, roof debris, fire season and local rainfall rather than relying on one universal interval.
Expert tips
- Do not seal factory overflow slots or openings because they look like leaks; they may be protecting the building when normal drainage is restricted.
- Do not climb onto a wet roof or use a ladder that requires leaning, stretching sideways or resting on the gutter.
- Gutter guards reduce some debris but still require inspection and can hide silt, seed, roof grit or blocked outlets.
- Never connect roof water to a household sewer unless the local authority and approved design explicitly permit it.
- Repeated overflow beside one wall should be linked to the drainage and damp investigation, not treated as a separate cosmetic stain.
- In fire-prone areas, accumulated dry leaf litter can also be a fuel hazard; follow regional bushfire or wildfire guidance.
Common questions
Why do clean gutters still overflow?+
The gutter may have inadequate fall, too few or restricted outlets, undersized downpipes, concentrated flow from a valley or upper roof, or a blocked or inadequate downstream stormwater route. Local rainfall intensity and roof catchment area matter, so a clean appearance does not prove adequate capacity.
Should I seal the small holes or slots in my gutter?+
No—not until the exact product and design are identified. Some openings are deliberate overflow measures intended to discharge water away from the building when the normal route is blocked or exceeded. Sealing them can redirect water behind the gutter into the eaves or wall.
Can I clear a downpipe with a garden hose?+
Only use a gentle flow when the outlet and downstream discharge are known and water is moving. Stop if water backs up or appears at a ground connection. High pressure can compact debris, separate weak joints or force water into the building; concealed blockages need appropriate professional equipment.
Will adding another downpipe stop overflowing?+
Only when the design check shows outlet or downpipe capacity is the limiting factor and the new pipe has an adequate lawful discharge route. It will not fix a blocked underground line, poor gutter fall, an overwhelmed soakage system or water overshooting from a concentrated upper-roof flow.
How often should gutters be cleaned?+
Inspect and clean according to actual exposure: nearby trees, roof moss or grit, nesting, fire season, storm season and known trouble spots. At least an annual check is a common starting point, but some homes need checks before and during the main leaf or rain season. Use professional access where the roof edge is not safely reachable.
Who fixes overflowing gutters?+
A gutter-cleaning service can handle routine accessible debris; a roofer or roof plumber can assess gutters, outlets and roof-edge details; and a drainage plumber or stormwater specialist can diagnose underground pipes, pits, soakage or tank connections. Structural movement or recurring water entry may need a building professional.
Is gutter overflow an emergency?+
Act promptly when water enters the ceiling or wall, spills near electrical equipment, saturates a bulging ceiling, loosens the gutter, or floods beside foundations. Keep people away, reduce indoor damage only if safe and call the appropriate emergency or qualified service.
