Map the moisture

Record the height, edges, affected materials, odour, visible salts, mould and whether the patch is on an exterior wall, below a wet room or beside a service.

Compare timing

Track rainfall, indoor humidity, cold weather and fixture use. A simple dated photo and humidity log can reveal a relationship that one inspection misses.

Check obvious sources

Inspect gutters, downpipes, roof and wall junctions, seals, plumbing routes, shower edges, external ground levels and subfloor ventilation where accessible and safe.

What height does rising damp reach?+

There is no universal cut-off that proves rising damp. Ground-linked moisture typically affects lower wall zones, but finishes, salts and evaporation can change the pattern.

Can condensation appear only on one wall?+

Yes. One wall can be colder because of orientation, missing insulation, thermal bridging, furniture blocking airflow or local moisture production.

Will waterproof paint stop damp?+

It may mask a surface temporarily, but it will not repair a leak, remove humid air, lower external ground or correct failed drainage and damp-proofing.
